Heatherside Christmas Tree 2022
We will be switching on the lights on the Heatherside Christmas Tree on Sunday 27/11/22. We will gather at 4.30pm with the lights being switched on by Louise Grainger, the Ravenscote Crossing campaigner at 5pm. Everyone is very welcome to join us to sing a few carols and welcome Christmas to Heatherside.
The words for the carols we will be singing are available on our website. Please download and print them if you wish here heathersidewra.weebly.com/2022-christmas-carols.html
This year the Christmas tree has been quite expensive so we are asking for donations to help pay for the tree next year and for our other community events. If you feel able to contribute something then we have set up a fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/hwra?utm_term=ZEYXm2JY9
All donations will be very gratefully received.

HWRA Virtual Painting Competition!
The results of the virtual painting competition have now been announced. Thank you to everyone who entered the competition and congratulations to the winners who will receive their prizes in the next few days! The competition was judged by Val Taylor, an artist friend of the committee. She commented 'It was extremely difficult to choose the winning paintings. I am in awe at the standard of all the work submitted and found the Under 10 category particularly exciting.'
The competition was judged 'blind' so only the painting titles and ages of the younger competitors were revealed to the judge, no names were included to ensure no bias. The images entered can be seen at https://heathersidewra.weebly.com/hwra-virtual-painting-competition.html
The winners are as follows
Under 10's category
Winner: Ruby Ing, age 7 (3rd image)
Runner Up: Sebastian Treves, age 8 (2nd image)
Judge's comments
I loved the overall composition of the winning painting. It has a really dynamic feel to it with the movement of the seaweeds and the whales’ tails. I also love the use of colour – the echo of orange at the top right hand corner is quite inspired!
The runner-up is also very dynamic with the nearly horizontal palm trees bending towards the stormy sea. So much movement in the sea and sky.
Age 10-15 Category
Winner: Isabelle Skipper, age 10 (1st image)
Runner-up: Catherine Hibberd, age 13 (3rd image)
Judge's comments
The winning painting has quite a dreamlike feel to it. There is a real sense of movement of the little figure walking towards the sea which has been achieved by cropping the feet and this helps leads the viewer’s eye into the painting.
On the runner-up I like the feeling of space and depth that results from the strong contrast and placement of the subjects in the foreground.
Age 16 and over category
Winner: Angela Holland - Children playing on the beach at sunset
Runner-up: Muriel Woodman - Horizontal Falls, Western Australia
Judge's comments
The winning painting has huge depth which is all the result of the five receding posts in the sand. Try covering them up and the painting loses half its power! The children are beautifully observed and are doubtless very identifiable to anyone who knows them despite being in silhouette. And the white line round the head of the little boy in front really pushes the standing figure back.
Lovely use of pen and wash on the runner-up painting. Great movement in the water as it tumbles over the rock.

Happy Christmas from HWRA
Sadly this year we haven't been able to hold our usual Christmas tree light switch on. However as promised there is a tree and it's now up and lit in the usual spot by The Wheatsheaf.
Larry has put together a lovely video showing how the tree was felled and then put up which you can see here www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qsZGNaZXBc

Thank you as always to our wonderful tree team. Without their efforts there would be no tree and this year the Covid situation has made it especially difficult. We still hope that maybe some carols can be sung around the tree but this is dependent on the latest rules.
We wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful and healthy New Year!

Christmas Art Competition
Thank you to everyone who took part in our Christmas art competition. The entries can be seen here and the winners can now be announced!

Judges Comments:
Under 10s category: - 1st image Lucy age 4
Great pieces by all these artists but I thought that the glamour and glitz of this colourful work really reflected the joy of Christmas.
Runner-up 2nd image Kyle age 6 – I liked the detail and the graphics
Age 10-15 category - 2nd image – Lauren age 10
I assume that both entries were by the same artist, Lauren! I liked the abstract quality of the second image, very imaginative. You should use this for your Christmas card 2021!
Age 16 and over category – 1st image – ‘Joy, Love, Hope, Peace’
All four entries in this category were very accomplished but I loved the theme of Joy, Love, Hope and Peace (by this unnamed artist) which seemed so appropriate for the times we are going through.
Runner-up 3rd image Chamila – so many lovely details in this homage to where she lives! Really personal and charming!
Thank you to our judge who was kind enough to take the time to choose our winners who will receive their prizes soon.

Easter Scarecrow Festival
HWRA is pleased to be hosting our first ever Easter Scarecrow Festival across Heatherside this coming Easter weekend. 🐣🍫
The aim is to bring some extra cheer to the community and provide a fun-filled activity for residents. Scarecrows should be made from items you have in and around your household – there is no requirement for any shopping trips to participate – no straw required!
Your scarecrow should be placed a minimum of 2 meters back from the pavement. If you’ve not got a front garden, a photograph of your entry in an alternative location within your home would be perfect.
To enter, simply submit a photograph via the HWRA Easter Scarecrow Festival post on Heatherside Ward Residents Association Facebook page stating your road name – no numbers, please! If you are not on Facebook you can email your entry to us at [email protected]. This should be submitted by Saturday 11th April at 12noon.
Judging will be undertaken on Monday 13th April by a special Heatherside guest – tbc.
The winning entry will get themselves the proud honour of switching on the lights for the next HWRA Christmas tree.

Heather Ridge Arcade Planters - Volunteers needed!
As we have previously mentioned, HWRA have been successful in obtaining a grant to carry out improvement works to the broken planters around the trees in Heather Ridge Arcade. We are ready to start work sorting the planters out (and possibly doing a bit of pruning on the side!) and we now need adult volunteers to join us.We will start this Sunday 12th May from 1.30 onwards for a couple of hours or so.
Further provisional dates are as follows:
Saturday 18th May
Sunday 19th May
Saturday 1st June
Sunday 2nd June
Further weekend and midweek dates will be added as necessary. Please let us know if you can join us this Sunday. If you want to help, but none of these dates suit, then please let us know.
We have limited equipment that we purchased today, but if you have your own and are happy to bring it along, then please do so.
The plan for this Sunday is to remove the rotten/broken sleepers and start to make good the planters using the remaining sleepers, so lifting, bending and carrying will be involved.
Please join us to try and tidy up this part of our community.
Thank you

HWRA Quiz Night - Friday 5th April
HWRA will be hosting another of our popular community quiz nights on the 5th April at the Heatherside Community Centre. We are holding this as a fun community event where you can spend time with your friends and neighbours.
We will be raising money from the ticket sales to enable us to fund events such as the Heatherside Christmas tree and lights and to enable us to pay for meeting rooms for our quarterly meetings. The support of the community in raising funds at events like this is invaluable in ensuring we can hold events like this in the future so please do join us if you can. Tickets can be purchased from us for £5 each via our email address [email protected].

Heatherside Christmas Tree Light Switch On
Heatherside Ward Residents Association and Heatherside Church would like to invite all residents to the Christmas light switch on event on the 25th November at 5pm.
Heatherside Christmas Tree - Vandalism
Unfortunately the Heatherside Community Christmas tree was vandalised on the evening of Boxing Day 2017. The tree was snapped in half and many of the lights and decorations damaged. As a result HWRA and Heatherside Church volunteers were forced to spend the following day clearing up the mess and removing what was left of the tree.
The vandalism has been reported to Surrey Police and they are investigating it.
HWRA have now also received an apology and a donation of £500 towards the cost of next years tree and decorations from those responsible for the damage. They are extremely remorseful and it would appear to be an act of drunken stupidity (daring each other to climb the tree) rather than mindless vandalism. Unfortunately it snapped.
As far as the HWRA is concerned the matter is now closed and we can all look forward to a bigger and better Christmas tree next year!

Heatherside Christmas Tree 2017
Heatherside Ward Residents Association, in partnership with Heatherside Church, were pleased to announce the return of the Heatherside Christmas Tree!
A large crowd of residents joined us at the Heather Ridge Arcade on Sunday the 26th November for the light switching on ceremony, Christmas carols and other festivities. Once again we were very grateful to be supported by a number of local businesses in providing the tree and lights. The tree committee worked really hard to source, install and decorate a great tree. We are also grateful to Sainsburys and Mehdi for supplying mince pies at the event and to Elodie Williams for playing beautiful music to accompany the carols.
A slideshow of photos of the event can be seen below.

UPDATE -Cheylesmore Park Play Area Redevelopment -
Consultation events for residents
Surrey Heath Borough Council have been working with HWRA to ensure that residents have a chance to have their say on the proposed new equipment for the play area in Cheylesmore Park.
The Council have approached a number of suppliers to provide proposal plans based on the feedback from the residents survey carried out earlier this year
The Council would now like to share these plans with residents and get your feedback on the various proposals before making a final decision on which supplier to use and what equipment to install. HWRA have had a sneak preview of these plans and they all look extremely exciting!
There were two opportunities to see the plans and make comments but if you were unable to make it to either of the events then the plans can now be viewed here until the 8th October.

There is an email address on this link if there is any feedback you would like to send to the Council.

Community Quiz Night - A big success!
HWRA held a successful quiz night on the 30th June which was to raise funds to pay for community events we host such as the Heatherside Christmas tree. We also hope to foster community spirit with an event where people could meet their friends and neighbours for an evening of fun without leaving Heatherside.
We had 9 teams take part and raised £140 which we will put towards the cost of Christmas festivities. Everyone who came seemed to have a great evening and we hope to run another quiz event in the future

Community Events 25th March 2017
HWRA were involved with two great opportunities to support the local Heatherside community.
In the community centre the Residents Association held a Table Top sale from 10am to 12pm. We had lots of people coming to sell both unwanted items such as children's clothes and and also local businesses selling homemade and other goods. Across the road the monthly community Pop Up Coffee Shop popped up at Heather Ridge School from 10-11.30am. As usual there were delicious cakes and lovely drinks and the PTA organised craft activities for children. Any money raised by these events will be ploughed straight back into helping the PTA fund resources for the school and into enabling the the Residents Association to fund events such as carols around the Christmas tree. We would like to hold more community events but we need your support to make this happen! |
Christmas on Heatherside 2016
HWRA had a Christmas tree in the shopping precinct again this year. The light switch on was held on the 26th Nov. We are very grateful to our sponsors for enabling such a successful event to go ahead with over 200 people enjoying the festivities.
We held an additional community event on the 15th Dec in the afternoon when children from Heather Ridge and members of the local community came and sang carols around the tree.

Clean for the Queen
On Sunday 13th March two groups of Heatherside residents and local councillors met to collect litter and generally clean up areas of Heatherside as part of the 'Clean for the Queen' Initiative organised by Cllr Ilnicki. Unfortunately lots of sacks of rubbish were collected, very frustrating when there are so many bins around!
Here are a few photos of some of the volunteers and the rubbish collected (click to enlarge). Thanks to everyone who came along to help.

The Heatherside Christmas tree 2015
We are very excited to have a Christmas tree on Heatherside this year. The light switch on on the 28th was a huge success with over 200 residents coming together to celebrate. Ravenscote school choir and the Secret Stage school provided entertainment while Sainsburys kindly donated mince pies and the pub was selling mulled wine. A snow machine provided atmosphere while the tree was blessed by Revd Bain and then Cllr David Ivison counted down to the light switch on. It's great to see the community coming together and this is hopefully the first of many future events the HWRA plan to organise.
Christmas events 2015
HWRA have been busy planning Christmas events for the community. We are still finalising the details but please put the following dates in your diary
28th November - Heatherside Christmas Tree light up. 3.30 for 4pm light up in the precinct. 17th December - Carols around the Christmas tree, supported by children from Heather Ridge School who will be singing a variety of festive tunes. |
